Levi’s - A History

Levi Strauss & Co. - known by its shorthand name, Levi’s - is a global company with global roots. The company was founded in 1853. The founder and namesake of the company, Levi Strauss, was a German immigrant living in Bavaria and came over to San Francisco, California. He landed in California to open up the west coast branch of his brother’s dry goods business. His brother had a branch already in New York.

One of the business’s frequent customers, Jacob Davis, was a constant purchaser of denim cloth. He eventually had an idea about rivets and durability, but could not purchase the patent. He wrote to Strauss about the idea and proposed that they go into business together. They both realized the need for clothes that would endure anything. In 1873, the first Levi jeans were born.

The company grew in popularity due to the rise of jeans amongst different groups of people: cowboys, lumberjacks, railroad workers, hippies, greasers, mods, and rockers. Today, the company has around 2,800 company-operated stores, multiple brands, and serves worldwide. It is headquartered in its original birthing place - San Francisco, California. And of course, they make our favorite thing - leather jackets.

How to take care of your leather jacket

How do I care for my Levi’s leather jacket?

Once you purchase your leather jacket, you will want to make sure to properly care for it so that it lasts longer. You can do this in a few ways:

  1. Conditioning - When it comes to taking care of your jacket on a daily basis, products such as leather conditioner are your friend. Make sure to get one that is meant for your leather jacket! As always, read the care instructions that come with it. Generally speaking, you should condition your jacket every few months. This keeps the leather supple. Similar to moisturizer for humans to avoid dry skin, we want to moisturize our leather to avoid drying cracks.
  2. Storing - Be sure to consider where you are storing your jacket. Use hangars that are wide and won’t cause folds. Wooden hangars are better than wire ones. If you decide to store your jacket away. Make sure it is in a climate controlled place.

Your jacket will come with care instructions, and heeding those is the best way to care for any leather jacket you purchase.
